In 2021, after her annual smear test at her local hospital, Wendy was diagnosed with 1A2 cervical cancer on 28th April. Wendy had to have a radical hysterectomy to have her ovaries, tubes and some lymph nodes removed and an MRI to make sure the cancer had not spread.
One of the hardest challenges for Wendy was the physical impact of the surgery and the early menopause this brought. Prior to her diagnosis Wendy enjoyed being active and owns 3 horses so was focused on trying to build up her strength by taking on slow walks with her husband Sean.
Through her diagnosis Wendy was lucky to have the support of Sean and their close network of family, friends and work colleagues, but was inspired to take on a challenge for Macmillan after her time spent in hospital.
We spoke to Wendy as she explained more about her story and experience. “It was really hard to get about [after the surgery] especially as I was an active person before. I had a lot of support from my family and work but I will always remember the very poorly people on my ward which is why I wanted to raise money for Macmillan as not everyone is as lucky to have the support as I am”
When asked why she wanted to do Tough Mudder after her battle, she said “I also wanted to do a challenge to get me fitter so it was a perfect combination. I have always been a fit and healthy person but it really has been one of the hardest things I have gone through.”
“Its given me more of an appreciation of my health and not to sweat the small stuff in life”
Wendy got stuck in to Tough Mudder South West 2022 in August with husband Sean. Overcoming our classic obstacles, Mudderhorn, Electric Shock Therapy and Arctic Enema and many more. Lightwork for Wendy.
We’re sharing her story to inspire others to overcome difficulty and adversity. What’s more, Wendy has also raised over £2,000 for Macmillan. You can still donate to her page here.
